From not knowing what to do with her life, to defying society’s expectations of what a cinematographer should be – uhmm ‘di lang lalaki ang pwedeng magbuhat ng ilaw at kamera, ok? – to landing a break as a cinematographer for a film that was nominated for Best Cinematography, Ice marched on with unwavering passion.

In 2016, she wrote, directed, and did cinematography for her first full-length film, “Sakaling Hindi Makarating”, which bagged major awards at the CineFilipino Film Festival as well as from the Urduja Heritage Film Festival (2017), Tourism Promotions Board of the Philippines, and the Asia Tourism-Induced Film and TV Arts Week (2018, Taizhou, China).

Since then, this 2017 PMPC Star Awards Indie Cinematographer of the Year has gone on to becoming a writer-director-cinematographer for both indie and mainstream films like Ania ‘Ti Nagan Mo? (What is your name?, 2017), Stranded (2019), and Cara x Jagger (2019).

Why “Lakambini Series”?

“Lakan” means “chieftain” and so, “Lakambini” means “woman leader”. The meaning only changed to “muse” later on.

In this series, we are reviving its true meaning. In commemoration of the 145th birthday of Gregoria de Jesus / Ka Oriang, who chose “Lakambini” as her alias in the Katipunan during the Philippine Revolution, we launched the “Lakambini Series” which aims to celebrate the different “lakambini” in the field of arts as well as feature works that champion women’s perspective on various aspects of life.
