OUR SINE TOMASINO EXPERIENCE
Congratulations to all the winners in this year’s Sine Tomasino Student Short Film Festival and to all the participants! Malaking bagay na makatapos ng pelikula. It puts you on your way to finding your voice.
Thank you again to the Thomasian Film Society for having us as one of the judges this year! Below is an excerpt of our (Ellen, Aimee, and Vanz) post-film festival chikahan of our recommended Sine Tomasino short films. Enjoy!
OUR RECOMMENDED SHORTS
Nina, a story of a food blogger who is challenged to maintain her image and how her decisions will change the course of both her life and career. Will Nina be able to get back to her previous life?
Q: Veronica Reyes from “Nina” as best actress?
A: Nakakainis yung pagka-maarte niya (haha). But I think that was the intention…to exaggerate things.
E: But she’s fascinating to watch diba?
V: Yes. Ganda pa ng pagka-edit.
E: Interesting siya to watch. At naalala ko yung anak ni Napoles. I feel “Nina” should also be watched because it’s the major danger now of social media. I thought it was so well put together.
A: Dangers of social media ba or of the people who use it?
E: Well social media and materialism. The power of social media or the power that is being given to bloggers. O diba si Duterte gusto niya yung mga bloggers yung maging media?
All: Ahh yes.
V: Tsaka nagustuhan ko rin kasi bago yung story at yun yung nangyayari ngayon.
E: Yes na dapat maging conscious tayo because it can happen or it may already be happening…parang sa situation with trolls din diba?
All: Yup, oo nga.
A jeepney driver worked hard so he can send his son to college. Shortly after his graduation, the son’s secret catches up to him and turns his father’s life upside down.
A: Naiyak ako! It humanized for me yung mga biktima ng EJK.
E: Ako rin! Ikaw (Vanz) naiyak ka rin?
V: Hindi naman. Pero na-touch ako. Tsaka yun talaga nangyayari ngayon.
E: Simpleng-simple lang yung istorya. Walang ka-melo-mellow drama pero madadala ka. Yun kasing dream na ‘yan ng mga magulang na maka-graduate yung anak nila, sobrang Pinoy kasi sa hirap ng buhay parang yun na yung pinaka-hope nila.
V: Medyo predictable lang kasi alam mo na yung mangyayari. Pero ang galing ng pagkaka-direct.
A: Effective pa rin storytelling kasi sasabay ka pa rin kahit alam mo na.
E: Tignan mo yun yung pinaka-common natin. Pinoy na Pinoy tayo gusto natin nata-touch!
E: Ang galing nung gumanap na tatay ang subtle lang ng acting.
A: Hmm minsan lang feeling ko kulang. Pero okay chemistry nilang mag-ama. At effective si ateng taga-Punerarya to the point na gusto ko siyang sabunutan at i-hug si Mang Jerry. Haha!
E: Pero sa lahat, sa akin must-see ito. I agree with its Best Direction and Best Screenplay award. It’s beyond plot. It really is about powerlessness which is really the one that touches you to the core. And it really is the major issue today.

ANG PINAKAMAGANDANG HABI NI SELYA
Known for its historic weaving culture, Baguio assures everyday life for its people through weaving industry. But over time, weavers surrender their threads and passion to seek better opportunities gone from the old state. They choose to forget and run away, just like the genealogical relationship of Selya and Amalia.
E: Grabe may mata talaga yung DOP niya. Bawat shot arresting yung composition.
A: Tsaka maganda yung color grading and okay din yung paggamit ng timelapse to show the passage of time although I think na-overuse siya to some extent. What do you think (Vanz)?
V: Okay yung cinematography the use of lines and texture kuha and match din sa color grading. Makikita mo and mararamdaman mo agad yung message and conflict.
E: Nakita ninyo ang tipid-tipid nila sa salita. They told the story visually without saying much. Mahirap yun ah pero ang language kasi ng film primarily visual.
A: Sinabi nga lang ni Selya yung metaphor aloud towards the end but I appreciate the metaphor used nonetheless.
E: Ah. Tsaka yung scene na umiikot siya sa bundok hawak-hawak yung damit na hinabi niya, I thought it was a very Manila touch. Shown through the eyes of someone from the city showing his/her perception and depiction of the countryside. Agree ba kayo sa shot na ‘yun?
A: Oo nga parang Sound of Music ang dating (haha). But it tells of a somehow dying culture kaya I think it’s important that their story is told.
E: That’s a major contribution! Parang CinemaRehiyon ng NCCA. Nakabase yung istorya sa kultura talaga nila. And cinematically, na-capture talaga nila yung expanse ng setting and craft of weaving.
Hernan, a spoken word enthusiast, ironically never spoke a word on stage until he met Vin. One open mic night, he stood up and unshackled the deafening piece he kept inside for a long time.
A: Actually naisip ko rin ‘tong concept nung pinag-uusapan namin ng OJTs yung tungkol sa Spoken Word Poetry Slam natin for Independence Day (Heads up, folks! Pelikulove will be having its Spoken Word Poetry Slam in celebration of Independence Day titled: “inDEPENDEnce SA’YO”. STAY TUNED ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE FOR DETAILS.) before kaya when I watched it nag-resonate siya sakin.
E: At nakadala yung spoken word. It carried the film.
A: Yes I agree. Maganda yung spoken word na ginamit. Although it could do some improvements sa acting, I think okay yung ginawa nila na they went beyond the usual spoken word format.
V: Yeah okay naman siya pero parang nagkakaroon ka ng idea kung ano yung character niya eh, kung anong mangyayari. Directing issue siguro? Pero yung istorya niya maganda.
E: Ahh medyo predictable.
A: Pero ako kahit nahuhulaan ko siya nadala pa rin ako. Siguro sa storytelling bumawi?
E: Sakin directing and acting talaga yung kailangan pa ng improvement.
V: Ang confusing lang din nung intention nung isang lalaking character kung makikipag-kaibigan ba siya or what.
All: Haha oo nga.
V: And medyo nahabaan lang ako sa iyak sa dulo nung lumuhod pa siya.
A: Yes, oo nga parang nasobrahan.
E: Eh bakit yung ibang staff naman dito sa Pelikulove hindi pa nga nagsasalita in front umiiyak na?
A: Baka kasi nahihiya sila (haha) pero sa “Katha” baka dapat ni-shorten na lang yung cut nung pag-iyak.
E: And it’s something na we recommend people to watch. Maraming makaka-relate kasi hit yung Spoken Word ngayon sa mga millennials.
